Wednesday, January 29, 2025 was a special day at the former Willowbrook site in Staten Island, NY. Many gathered in celebration of Governor Kathy Hochul‘s $75 million plan to invest in OPWDD’s Institute for Basic Research.
The plan will also memorialize Willowbrook by transforming a once abandoned building into a vibrant Center for Learning that will recognize the significance of the site in a meaningful way.
This investment in the governor’s budget proposal will enhance New York’s research capabilities and expand access for genetic testing. The plan would help hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers while preserving the past.
Willow Baer, Commissioner of the State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities commented, “New York State’s —and the nation’s — history of institutionalization of people with disabilities is one we continue to learn from every day, making a goal of full community inclusion the heart of everything we do.” Our very own, Jose Rivera, Director of Quality Assurance, has been a staunch advocate for individuals with developmental disabilities for decades and had an integral role in the effort to make this happen! Jose was a guest speaker at the event and shared his personal experiences of having a brother reside for a time at Willowbrook.
