Throughout the month of October, in recognition of National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), OPWDD will pay tribute to the 58 pioneering businesses that have taken the EmployAbility Pledge launched last year and encourage other businesses to follow in their footsteps.
The 2019 NDEAM theme, The Right Talent, Right Now, describes not only the positive contributions people with disabilities can make in the workplace; it also illustrates a culture shift in the business community as employers embrace inclusive hiring practices.
To help grow New York’s workforce of people with disabilities, the Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) is launching a statewide social media challenge to encourage New York businesses and organizations, however large or small, to take the pledge. Businesses that take the EmployAbility Pledge will receive a window decal and a badge for their website, designating their business as one that supports inclusion, as well as recognition on the OPWDD website.
The EmployAbility Pledge encourages businesses to commit to embracing a philosophy of inclusivity and to join New York State in creating communities that seek to include individuals of all abilities. The pledge builds on the efforts of the EmployAbility Toolkit which provides businesses with guidance for employing people with disabilities and an overview of the benefits of hiring people with disabilities.
Employees with disabilities are proven to be dependable, flexible and reliable. They are enthusiastic, have a positive effect on employee morale and remain on the job longer than employees who do not have disabilities, resulting in lower turnover and lower training costs for businesses.
Hiring people with developmental disabilities is a win-win for businesses. It just makes good business sense!
