The New York State Dental Foundation has given its 2016 Give Kids a Smile Award to the Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County. CP Nassau received a vacuum unit, valued at nearly $4,000, needed to help treat individuals with developmental disabilities served by the Agency.  More than 1,800 children and adults with developmental disabilities, including cerebral palsy as well as traumatic brain injury and stroke participate in programs at the Agency.  CP Nassau is very grateful to Ms. Laura Clark Leon, Executive Director, New York State Dental Foundation; Assistant Executive Director, New York State Dental Association and President, Dental Philanthropy Network for her assistance in obtaining this vital piece of equipment through the grant.

“This equipment is so incredibly important, financially and programmatically, for us,” states Karen L. Nielsen, CP Nassau Grants Coordinator. “We provide health care in our Roosevelt facility, as many of our patients cannot be treated in a typical dental office setting due to their special needs. When our old vacuum unit failed, we were desperate to find a replacement, but due to the financial aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, were hard pressed to fund it.”

The Foundation’s “Give Kids a Smile Award” is given annually to a community health center or service program which builds, expands or enhances education, access and/or capacity with respect to oral health care for children. It is inspired in part by the American Dental Association’s efforts to help children get the dental care that they need and to raise awareness that our children deserve a better health care system that addresses their dental health needs.

Dr. Joseph Brofsky, Trustee of the New York State Dental Foundation visited CP Nassau and presented Robert McGuire, CP Nassau Executive Director with a check for $4,000 and presented the “Give Kids a Smile” award plaque.  Senator Carl Marcellino was instrumental in obtaining the grant and was on hand for the ceremony.  Supervisor of the Town of Oyster Bay, John Venditto was also helpful in the grant process was not able to attend the ceremony.

The New York State Dental Foundation is a non-profit corporation addressing the educational and humanitarian commitments of the New York State Dental Association. Its mission is to improve the oral healthcare of all New Yorkers.
