Members of the Life Options program at ucpn visited Mineola Middle School in June to provide a disability awareness program. Maura Wachsberger, Life Options Program Instructor, said that we were told that the seventh graders read the book “Out of My Mind” by Sharon M. Draper. The book is about a person with a disability who, when given the opportunity to be able to communicate using a augmentative communication board, was found to be very bright.
The Mineola students were so moved by this book that they decided to raise money for ucpn. The students gave 2 checks totaling more than $600.00 and expect to give us at least $400.00 more by the end of June. Maura reports, “they were very impressed with Kevin, Charlie, Patty V. and Sara Ozol and happy to learn more about people with disabilities. It was truly a rewarding experience. They have invited us back for June 24th for their talent show and we will gladly participate with some of Creation!”
